Biological Age : 34 Real Age : 13.2 (Tell me something people didn't know)
Average Life Expectancy : 74 Your Life Expectancy : 94.8
You can expect to live approximately another 22200 more days.
So in theory if I drink less and get married, I could almost live forever. Oh wait, I'd also have to do that and still be not stressed and not anxious. :)

I thought this was pretty interesting in the Baltimore Sun. It's a bit of a complaint about the new superintendent of the Baltimore Schools but it has some very interesting statistics about the Baltimore City school budget relative to other Maryland county systems. (Which is to say interesting to those who care about that topic)

Okay:
If you don't argue placement on the list, it's not a terrible top 25 sci fi list for the last 25 years. However, notably missing were Babylon 5 and Stargate in any form. I have no idea how these could not even make the list, considering they put Firefly on there so they were somewhat in the know. Also missing was Farscape, but I grant you that is a touch more debatable than B5. http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20036782_20037403_20037541,00.html

*rolls eyes*

You are The Devil
Materiality. Material Force. Material temptation; sometimes obsession
The Devil is often a great card for business success; hard work and ambition.
Perhaps the most misunderstood of all the major arcana, the Devil is not really "Satan" at all, but Pan the half-goat nature god and/or Dionysius. These are gods of pleasure and abandon, of wild behavior and unbridled desires. This is a card about ambitions; it is also synonymous with temptation and addiction. On the flip side, however, the card can be a warning to someone who is too restrained, someone who never allows themselves to get passionate or messy or wild - or ambitious. This, too, is a form of enslavement. As a person, the Devil can stand for a man of money or erotic power, aggressive, controlling, or just persuasive. This is not to say a bad man, but certainly a powerful man who is hard to resist. The important thing is to remember that any chain is freely worn. In most cases, you are enslaved only because you allow it.

» Maryland and Smoking
Okay, just finished reading a Baltimore Sun article on a proposed smoking ban in Baltimore, debates about the State, etc...
It indicates that the democratically controlled state legislature has killed a ban proposal for the state for the last four years. I was wondering if anyone a bit more in the local political know can explain that to me? It seems to me that this would be an issue right up their alley, protect the workers is the arguement that has banned smoking all through the northeast bars and restaurants...

» I love my inner geek!
Modern, Cool Nerd 73 % Nerd, 86% Geek, 21% Dork | For The Record:
A Nerd is someone who is passionate about learning/being smart/academia.
A Geek is someone who is passionate about some particular area or subject, often an obscure or difficult one.
A Dork is someone who has difficulty with common social expectations/interactions.
You scored better than half in Nerd and Geek, earning you the title of: Modern, Cool Nerd.
Nerds didn't use to be cool, but in the 90's that all changed. It used to be that, if you were a computer expert, you had to wear plaid or a pocket protector or suspenders or something that announced to the world that you couldn't quite fit in. Not anymore. Now, the intelligent and geeky have eked out for themselves a modicum of respect at the very least, and "geek is chic." The Modern, Cool Nerd is intelligent, knowledgable and always the person to call in a crisis (needing computer advice/an arcane bit of trivia knowledge). They are the one you want as your lifeline in Who Wants to Be a Millionaire (or the one up there, winning the million bucks)!
Congratulations!

So like a few others on my friends list, my football hatred of the Dallas Cowboys sometimes leaks into all things Dallas. Hardly fair I suppose, and one should keep an open mind.
And then, watching the NBA finals tonight at the start of the game the cameras cut to Troy Aikman and the announcers point out the Hall of Fame Cowboys QB and I think to myself, "The Mavericks are SO going to lose tonight!!!"

» NSA and the phone companies
Unlike some, I could live with NSA having the information they are getting from the phone companies. What I do not like is they chose to ignore any official process (IE FISA, attorney generals office) to get a subpoena to get this information. However, as the law reads, I don't believe they were required to do so if they are in fact not linking the information to any other databases that have names or addresses. The reason I often rant about involving a court of some sort is that I believe oversight of these types of projects is critical. It may very well be needed at times to track domestic terrorism, but there also needs to be accountability by the organizations that do the monitoring, and without judicial review I don't see how that is possible.
In this case though, it was the responsibility of the phone companies to say no to this request. While it was technically legal for the NSA to ask, the various telecommunications acts are pretty clear that it was not okay for these companies to turn over customer records without court order. They were the ones in this case who had the obligation by law to protect our rights, and they failed us. People are already taking this matter to the courts and I do believe the telecoms will be vulnerable. I am also curious if the FCC will bother to enforce their clear policies or if they enjoy spending all there time just legislating morality. NSA might get a pass for awhile but the number of things they have done lately has created huge exposure for them and I believe investigations will eventually get around the things they are doing to delay them. (That's another rant)
Anyway, what I suggest for anyone who cares is to get rid of your Verizon and ATT phone services as much as you can. There are often alternate DSL, Phone, and Cellular carriers so it can potentially be done without hardship. I for one am doing so and have also sold my ATT stock as of yesterday as I do not wish to reward these companies.
Sadly, we are more at risk from losing our liberty and way of life from internal threat than anything a foreign group can do.

» Six quirks meme thing...
Each player of this game starts with the "6 weird habits/things about yourself" and people who get tagged need to write a blog of their 6 weird habits/things, as well as state this rule clearly. In the end, you need to choose 6 people to be tagged and list their names.
I'm not going to name anyone though, as I think everyone who wants to do it has done so. :)
So anyway, here are the ones I could think of.
1. I am passionately opposed to people not wiping all of the snow off of their cars before driving in them. That's the roof too, all of it. I've heard almost every reason possible and excluding physical disability, it's still not okay with me. I'm late, I'm weak, my SUV is too fracking huge, It's all iced up b/c I didn't do it earlier, blah blah blah. I hate seeing it, and I really don't enjoy when it flies off the back of the vehicle into other cars. (Okay, so this habit thing seems more like some form of emotional baggage than I thought) :)
2. The movie Armageddon makes me very very sad. That's probably true for some others, but it's pretty strange for me.
3. When I used to rent, I would move every two to three years. I always thought that was healthy to not accumulate too much stuff. Now that I've started owning houses, I seem to be moving even more frequently than that. I am afraid of this trend as I really don't like the process of moving that much. I am however, damn good at it.
4. I watched the original Dawn of the Dead on VHS when I was maybe 8. It scared the hell out of me and gave me nightmares for weeks. That elevator scene, *shivers* It did start me on the road to being zombie educated and aware, which I continue on to this day.
5. I built my current house without any visible brass, gold, etc... I was the crazy guy telling people that I was so serious about it if they noticed themselves putting it in and thought I wouldn't mind there, they were wrong, to stop, and contact me. This included hinges, water shut off valves, and anything else I might be able to see. Copper pipe was still okay though.
6. I don't ever send on chainmails unless they are funny or worthwhile. If they are funny or worthwhile, I remove the chain mail portion that tells people they must continue it.

» RFID Dialogues
Occasionally there has been some chat amongst people on here about RFID and what it can do so I thought I'd enclose a short article about testing being done in Japan.
Pure sake (the expensive kind) needs to be kept in the right temperature while they are transported. Failing to do so will degrade its quality. NTT Data, Toppan Forms, Nippon Access, and Hino will start a pilot test using RFID tags with integrated temperature sensors. Each bottle of Sake is tagged with RFID labels, boxes of Sake bottles are tagged with active sensor RFID tags, trucks read the temperature information from the tags and send it out to an information center using the 3G phone network. The information can be monitored in real time. Also, a the store front, consumers can check the (historical) temperature information using a kiosk terminal.
Since Pure sake is so delicate, it was difficult to transport it to somewhere far away from where it is made. This monitoring system together with a mobile fridge called E-CRB could allow for transportation of pure sake to various areas. (From Nikkei ITPRO)
Now this is definitely meant to be a fun and very clever idea but it also points out some of the future capabilities of RFID. There have been previous conversations about tagging automobiles and the use of that information. Active tags could have embedded sensors for speed, location and transmit that data over our own cell/blackberry/pager/wireless to wherever and keep a historical database that can also be monitored in real time. Hell, you could link it to the cars computer which already keeps a ton of information and transmit all of that if you wanted to. Anyway, just wanted to share as it's an interesting development in the RFID world.

» Muhammad cartoons
I was asked today to find the cartoons that were originally published in Denmark's Jyllands-Posten newspaper. In case others were curious what has started the current uproar, I am enclosing the link here.
http://www.humaneventsonline.com/sarticle.php?id=12146
Apparently CNN in coverage of the violence and protest that has stemmed from the publishing of these cartoons pixilated them during their coverage so viewers would not be able to see them. Let me be clear that there is nothing illegal in this country about the publishing of these cartoons. Whether someone or even a whole religion views them as offensive does not change the fact that this form of speech is still legal in the United States and should be treated as such.
